Year R - Hedgehogs
Welcome!
Welcome to Year R! We have a planned a year of exciting experiences, which will form the foundation of your children’s learning journey at St Swithun Wells Catholic Primary School. Each day, we aim to make the most of our wonderfully resourced classroom and outside area.
Friday is our school library session Please make sure that your child brings their library book to school, so that they can choose another one for the weekend.
Water bottles
Please send your child in with a labelled water bottle each day. These are kept in our classroom and so they can be accessed easily by your child.
Coats
Please be aware that we go outside in most weathers (heavy rain, high winds and storms are the exception), so we ask you to send a labelled coat in each day. These are hung on pegs in our classroom.
Slippers
We give children the option of wearing slippers in the classroom, as this can make them feel more comfortable. These are kept in a special place in the classroom and can be readily accessed by the children.
Welly boots
As we enjoy learning in all weathers, we ask you to send a pair of labelled wellies into school. These will be kept in school, so the children do not have to carry them home each day.
Home Learning
Sharing books- we encourage you to share books with your child as often as possible. This can be your child’s library book or a favourite book from home. We use the Little Wandle phonics scheme in our school and once the children have started to learn to blend they will have reading books to read share with you at home. The children will also be bringing tricky words home to learn.
Maths skills can be practised in everyday activities. Can your child count out the plates for the dinner table? Can your child use mathematical language such as “taller” and “shorter” around the home? Can they recognise the number on their front door? Maths is everywhere!
Knowledge and understanding of the world- continue to talk to your child about the weather and the seasons. Talk is the key to learning at this point. Talk about everything together and their vocabulary will naturally increase
