Year 6 - Otters
Welcome
Learning
Welcome to Year 6! The final year of your primary school journey is full of exciting new adventures and challenges and will provide a sound start for all their future learning as you prepare to transition into secondary school.
P.E. - Our P.E. days are Mondays and Fridays. On Mondays, the children need to bring in their PE kit to change into during the afternoon. On Fridays, the children can wear their PE kit to school all day.
Equipment - All resources are supplied for the children. However if they wish to bring in a personal pencil case, they can do so store this in their locker to be brought out for occasional use. We kindly ask that children do not bring in toys, stickers and similar items into school.
Water bottles - Children can bring in their water bottles and place them in the trays on the classroom sink, where they can access them throughout the day. Please can these be of a suitable size, sealable and not too bulky so they all fit in the space.
Home Learning
Homework will be set on a Wednesday and due in the following Monday. It can help to find a regular time, that suits your family schedule, to do the homework in a quiet setting when your child is not too tired. Homework will consist of:
- Maths - Times Tables Rockstars online practice and MyMaths online tasks. (You may also wish to visit websites such as: mathsframe, timestables.co.uk and topmarks to access free educational games!)
- Spelling/Grammar - There will be tasks set on Spag.com. Spellings will be sent home on a Wednesday and tested the following Monday. There are a variety of ways the children can learn their spellings - we have discussed these in class. (Another helpful website to help improve English grammar is gamestolearnenglish.com)
- Reading - Aim for 5-20 minutes of reading at home each day. All reading counts! E-books, audiobooks, magazines, recipes, library books, own books... (Some helpful websites to explore to find good book recommendations are: thereaderteacher.com and booksfortopics.com)
Educational Visits
We have some very exciting trips and opportunities planned for year 6 this year.
The first will be to The Mayflower Theatre where the children will be attending a live performance of iD Reloaded. Inspired by the internationally acclaimed iD by Cirque Eloize, this high-energy show is a thrilling fusion of circus arts, urban dance, and music – including b-boying, breakdance, hip-hop and more. It promises to be an unforgettable opportunity for the children to see daring stunts and creativity come to life on stage.
Year 6 will be taking part in Bikeability sessions which will be replacing their Monday afternoon PE sessions for the second half of the Autumn Term. The children will not need to bring in a PE kit on Mondays during Autumn 2.
During the Spring Term, we will take the children on the Year Six residential trip to Calshot Activity Centre, where the children will take part in an exciting range of outdoor and adventure activities. The Calshot residential offers an unforgettable mix of teamwork, challenge, and fun — from climbing and orienteering to skiing and problem-solving sessions. This action-packed experience will give the children the chance to build confidence, develop new skills, and create lasting memories with their friends.
Later in the year, we will be taking the children to Southampton City Art Gallery where the children will explore a fascinating collection of artworks retelling the myth of Perseus and Medusa and take part in a clay workshop to sculpt their own Medusa heads. They will also have the opportunity to discover the gallery’s wider exhibits in small groups, linking their learning in History and Art through creativity and ancient storytelling.
Thank you for your support in your child's learning for the year ahead.
